The Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR) is a precision rifle integrated into infantry squads to extend their effective engagement range and provide accurate fire support. Typically chambered in 7.62 NATO, the SDMR features a 16″ to 20″ barrel (depending on the variant) for improved accuracy and ballistic performance, while maintaining enough maneuverability for squad-level operations. Equipped with a mid ranged variable power optic (usually 1–6x or 2.5–10x), a bipod, and often a suppressor, the SDMR enables the designated marksman to engage targets accurately out to 600–800 meters. Unlike full sniper systems, the SDMR emphasizes versatility—allowing the marksman to rapidly transition between close, medium, and long-range targets—making it ideal for supporting fire in both open and urban combat scenarios.
